SEO for Flooring Companies: Four Shops' Search Console Data

Google Search Console data for four flooring shops, and what we built at each: town pages, technical fixes and, at one shop, review requests.

Google results for 'hardwood flooring westfield ma' with Cruz and Sons Hardwood Flooring first in the local pack, rated 5.0 from 10 reviews, above two established flooring stores

Search Console shows more Google clicks after our work at each of the four flooring shops below, but the gains differ in size and the causes are mixed. Kelly's Flooring had 71% more clicks in the five months after a rebuild than in the five months before. TDS Flooring had 65% more in May to July 2026 than a year earlier. Cruz and Sons went from 1 click to 92 on a new site. Paso Robles Floor Co had 4% more clicks than in the same season a year earlier, on 26% fewer impressions. TDS's most recent comparison is down, and we have no booked-job counts for any of the four.

The work differed by shop: service and town pages at all four, technical fixes at Kelly's and TDS, listings management at Kelly's, and at Cruz and Sons a Google Business Profile with automatic review requests. A click is a visit to the website. It does not count phone calls, direction requests or booked jobs. These are also uncontrolled before-and-after views: a new site such as Cruz's goes from 1 click to 92 partly because Google is discovering it, and we cannot separate that from the work.

What Google says decides local ranking

Google's help page on local ranking names three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for. Distance is how far each business is from the searcher. Prominence is how well known a business is, and Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. The same page says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

A flooring company cannot change distance for a given search. In our view, relevance is the factor it controls most directly, through what its profile and its pages say, and reviews feed prominence. By local pack we mean the block of map listings Google shows above the regular results.

    Service and town pages

Kelly's old site ranked for the store's name and little else. The rebuild added eight town pages: Ballwin, Eureka, Fenton, High Ridge, Kirkwood, Manchester, St. Louis and Wildwood. We recorded average positions for four of them: High Ridge 4.8, Eureka 9.9, Wildwood 10.1 and Ballwin 10.5. We did not record which search each position is for, and we have no figure for the other four pages. TDS added six pages across MetroWest, for Framingham, Hudson, Maynard, Northborough, Holliston and Marlborough. Cruz launched with a page for each service and each nearby town, and Paso Robles has one for each service and each Central Coast town.

A person who searches "flooring Eureka" wants to see that you work in Eureka. We recommend a town page with the jobs you have done there, photos from those jobs, the services you offer in that area and a phone number. Build pages only for towns you serve, and write each one from real work. A page that swaps the town name into identical text tells the reader very little.

    Technical clean-up

According to our notes on Kelly's old site, it was missing page headings and meta information, and its Google Business Profile would not sync. TDS scored 86% on a technical SEO audit in November 2024, and the clean-up took it to 100%. We do not have those audit reports to publish, and we cannot separate the effect of the clean-up from the effect of the new pages at either shop.

    Reading the numbers

Search Console defines impressions as how many times your site appeared in Google results, clicks as how many times someone clicked through, and click-through rate as clicks divided by impressions. Impressions alone tell you little, so watch clicks and click-through rate beside them.

At Kelly's, clicks in April to August 2026 were 71% higher than in November 2025 to March 2026 (1,113 against 652), on 8% more impressions (127K against 118K), so the click-through rate went from 0.6% to 0.9%. Spring is flooring season, so the fairer test is the same summer months a year apart.

Kelly's Flooring, Google Search Console, June to August. Click-through rate is clicks divided by impressions.

    Impressions140,35084,053
    Click-through rate0.24%0.77%
    Average position51.023.8

Clicks rose 92% while impressions fell 40%. Average position is taken across every impression, so a fall in impressions from searches where a site ranked low can improve it without any page moving up. Kelly's position had also improved before the rebuild: across November to March it was already 26.2, against 24 across April to August. Most of the gain from 51.0 was in place by March, and we did not record what drove it.

The April step, from 129 clicks in March to 232, came on almost the same impressions (18,017 in March and 18,046 in April), so it was more clicks per impression and not more impressions. We did not pull clicks by page for that month, so we cannot say the town pages produced it.

At Paso Robles, the same-season comparison is close to flat: 200 clicks from 11,795 impressions in May to July 2025 and 208 clicks from 8,733 impressions in May to July 2026, which is 4% more clicks on 26% fewer impressions. The 254 clicks in February to April 2026 come from a different season.

Some clicks come from people searching for the business by name. Our notes put that at roughly a third of Kelly's clicks. The Paso Robles case study says a large share of its clicks are searches for the business by name, and gives no figure.

The Google Business Profile and reviews

Cruz and Sons came to us in the spring of 2026 with no website, no Google Business Profile and no reviews, in a town where three established flooring stores already held the map. We claimed and filled out the profile, built the site with a page per service and town, and set up an automatic review request after each finished job.

Our records put Cruz at number one on Google Maps for "hardwood flooring westfield ma" within 30 days of the domain being registered. We do not have a dated capture from that time. The screenshots here are from 17 September 2026, taken while signed in to a Google account with the location set to Westfield, MA, so the results may be personalized. For "hardwood flooring westfield ma" Cruz was first in the local pack with a 5.0 rating from 10 reviews, above stores with 31 and 102 reviews. For "hardwood floor refinishing westfield ma" the local listings appear under a Places heading, and Cruz was first there, with 10 reviews against 3 and 20 for the other two, and first in the regular results. It ran no ads.

Google, "hardwood floor refinishing westfield ma", 17 September 2026, location set to Westfield, MA, signed in to a Google account.

Google labels Cruz "Floor refinishing service" on the refinishing search and "Flooring contractor" on the hardwood flooring search, and the other listings in the refinishing capture show "Flooring contractor". We cannot tell from two captures how Google chooses the label or whether it affects ranking. Google treats reviews as one part of prominence, and relevance and distance count as well, so review count alone does not set the order. One search from one location does not show what caused the ranking, and we would not expect the same result in every town.

Ask every customer for a review, and do not pay for fake reviews or for reviews that have to be positive. The FTC's 2024 rule on fake reviews and testimonials bans buying or selling fake reviews and paying for reviews that depend on a positive or negative sentiment. It also covers a business that hides negative reviews and presents the rest as all of them.

    What the timelines show

At Kelly's, monthly clicks ran between 110 and 151 from November to March, then reached 232 in April, the month the rebuilt site went live on 8 April. The Business Profile dashboard showed calls rising from 40 in February to 87 in May, though some of that is seasonal.

    Search Console comparison for kellysflooring.com: 1 April to 31 August 2026 against 1 November 2025 to 31 March 2026, showing 1.11K clicks against 652, 127K impressions against 118K, click-through rate 0.9% against 0.6% and average position 24 against 26.2
    Search Console for kellysflooring.com: 1 April to 31 August 2026 against 1 November 2025 to 31 March 2026.

TDS's clicks rose in each quarter of the table below, and its average desktop position went from 46.6 to 19.6 over five quarters. The table starts on 5 May 2025 because Search Console keeps 16 months of data, and the site's audit was in November 2024, so some of the work predates it. The latest comparison is weaker. From 30 May to 27 August 2026, against 1 March to 29 May, clicks fell from 239 to 218, impressions from 46.7K to 28K, and average position moved from 19.1 to 24.2, while click-through rate rose from 0.5% to 0.8%. Those windows do not line up with the quarters in the table, we have no monthly breakdown for TDS, and we do not have an explanation for the decline.

At Paso Robles, average mobile position went from 30.7 in May to July 2025 to 9.3 in February to April 2026, and it has since settled around 10. We did not record when the work at Paso Robles began, so the first quarter may already include some of it.

    What we would do first

    1. Claim the Google Business Profile, choose the right main category and list every service you offer.
    2. Run a technical audit and fix missing titles, headings and meta descriptions.
    3. Write a page for each service and each town you serve, using your own jobs and photos.
    4. Set up a review request that goes to every customer after every job.
    5. Add a missed-call text-back so unanswered calls get a reply. It does not change rankings. Cruz has one.
    6. Check Search Console monthly for clicks, impressions and average position by page, and judge the work over quarters.

What these numbers do not show

    • These four shops were chosen from the sites we have built because we can show their numbers, so they are not a sample of our clients.
    • Screenshots and exports are from 17 September 2026. Google revises recent data: Cruz's window reads as 92 clicks in our export and 93 on the live screen.
    • Search Console position is an average across many searches and pages. The Paso Robles position figures are for mobile. On desktop, which shows about 63% of its impressions, the average position from 30 May to 27 August 2026 was 13.8.
    • Kelly's call count is the only call figure in this post, and we have no booked-job counts for any of the four shops.
    • Only the Kelly's summer comparison and the Paso Robles same-season comparison hold the season constant, and neither has a control group of similar shops that got no work.

If you run a flooring company and want us to look at your site, you can book a call.
